SANDWICH Crackers -- apparently difficult to open

By wes - Posted on 30 July 2008

I'm a cynic and I generally see things that are really trivial and I make an issue where no issue exists. Recently I got on the soap box for a laugh regarding a particular vendors packaging.

Like most business our has a snack room and luckily enough we have a vending machine or four :-) Occasionally I get the munchies and have to make a trip by the break room. I'm a fan of the vendors Cream Cheese and Chives Sandwich Crackers. Yes they are called Sandwich Crackers, check the vendors website... no, I'm not going to name the vendor. You should recognize the flavor and recall the vendor.

Anyway, I've enjoyed numerous packs of these particular crackers over the course of my lifetime and I've always successfully opened the pack of crackers and to the delight of the vendor, I'm sure, I ate them. Done this as long as I can remember, never had a complaint about the process of buying the crackers, opening the crackers or such trivial things.

Well, apparently I'm in the minority. Because, just last week I made a trip by the break room and bough me a pack of those tasty little Cream Cheese and Chive SANDWICH crackers to satisfy the gnawing in my belly. I pocketed those SANDWICH crackers and made my way back to my desk, sat down and began to open the SANDWICH crackers when I noticed a new label. I read it twice and saved the package and showed it to a co-worker to be sure that I understood. But this package read EASY-OPEN package.      pause for effect      Yep, EASY-OPEN was what it read.

I had to ponder this a minute and thought out loud...did somebody have a problem getting into the package and called the manufacturer and complain? Surely not, hopefully not. Because if you have a problem getting into a package of SANDWICH crackers, maybe your first call should not have been to the manufacturer/vendor. Maybe your occupational therapist would have been the person to call.

Then, the other option is that product development had a slack week and needed to produce something to keep the upper management satisfied and the new guy blurted out something that just popped in his head. "We should make the package easier to open."

Well, marketing would certainly love this, "EASY" is a buzz word and consumers are drawn to "easy" like a moth to a flame, I know b/c I'm one of them.

Anyway, I wanted to share this with the world, I'm planning on getting another package of those SANDWICH crackers and putting a photo up for proof.

The really good side of this is that I'll burn less calories opening their EASY-OPEN package and I'll be more productive at work being I wont burn off all those energy producing fat grams :-). Maybe I'll pitch that to my boss as reason for a raise...I'll be a whole 1/10th of a second more productive b/c a vendor thought enough of the productivity of the working force to make the SANDWICH crackers easier to open. I'm a genius and with that I'll quit.

A thought to ponder later. Why do they call the Sandwich Crackers? They are not sandwiches! Maybe I'll call them and complain.

I'm going to bed now.....
